Mid-Year!

It is so hard to believe that we have reached the half-way point to this year.  I have seen so much growth in my students since the beginning of the year.  They have become writers, readers and mathematicians.  They love to build and create.   They love to learn and are learning to use their words to resolve conflicts.  Below are some photos of what we have been up to over the past few weeks. Enjoy!
Designing and creating a mitten that would fit on their hand.

So much concentration.

Getting advice from classmates.

Determined to complete the task.
We learned a lot about Penguins.  We learned they can stay underwater for 20 minutes. Emperor Penguins can jump 5 feet from the water onto the ice.  Blubber and 2 layers of feathers keep penguins warm.  Below we tried our own "Blubber Glove" to see if it would keep our hands warm.
Ice water not as cold with a blubber glove.
Drawing and painting penguins.
Little artists!

Not sure we would want to be a penguin, but the blubber glove was a hit!

We began exploring magnets.  We found out that sometimes magnets attract and repel one another.

We also did a measuring unit where we were able to measure different parts of us!
We began using a new math tool.  The rekenrac helps us to solve problems.  We use this to show how we can make numbers in different ways.
12 is 8 on top and 4 on the bottom.

Starting point- white on the right!
