Shape exploration!

Math 2015
Comparing Names- In this investigation, students built name sticks. They then found names that had fewer letters, the same number of letters and ones that had more letters.  We also ordered all the names in our classroom!

Math 2015

In math we are working on building numbers and using Roll and Record to help with number fluency.  Students are working on thinking flexibly to make numbers in different ways.

Math 2014

After exploring the materials the real work begins!

Building numbers

Roll and Record- this is a game we will use all year.  At first we count the dots to see how many and find the number to match. Later on we will roll two dot cubes and add the numbers together. We will also play "Double Roll and Record, and Add One, or Take One Away"

Using shapes to create things we see in real life.

Building a pattern.

Extending a pattern!

Sorting by attribute

This circles rule was- Yellow!

Building shapes with our magic strings! This wasn't easy at first, but each time we get a little better.  We are now working on building a trapezoid!

Getting used to the materials we will use this year.

Built it!  This week we learned a new game called build it.  We loved showing the numbers on our ten frames.  You can make numbers in so many different ways!

We have been investigating with our pattern block shapes!

Many Penguins took the challenge to see how many different ways they could make the hexagon!

We have been talking about fractions!  Take a peak at what we have learned!

We are beginning a new unit called, Make a Shape, Build a Block.  It begins with students looking for 2-D shapes in their environment.  They will use paper shapes and the Shapes software to make pictures.   They will also use pattern blocks, geoboards,  and clay to make a variety of shapes.  Throughout all lessons the focus will be on describing and comparing 2-D shapes.

You can have fun hunting shapes at this link.

Our class is beginning a new math unit called Counting and Comparing.  This unit will focus on counting and comparing groups of objects.  Students will be working on -
--Counting sets of objects  (5-15 items)
-- deciding  which of two objects is longer
--compare two quantities to see which is greater.

Students will play the games Grab and Count, Roll and Record and Compare.  I will send the games home so that you can play too!
