This is becoming a great group of mathematicians.  They are enjoying our math activities and are really sharing their strategies and understandings.  Here are a few pictures of some math activities.

Apple orchard trip

It was a rainy day, but we all had a lot of fun!  We learned a lot about apples and had a lot of fun hunting for the very best apples!

Totem Pole

For our class cardboard challenge, we decided to make a totem pole.  We learned that some communities use totem poles to tell their story.  This totem pole tells our story!

Cardboard challenge

After reading Not A Box, we decided to create our own not a box project.  As a class we are working on creating a Totem Pole that will tell our class story. (check back to see how it turned out)  Then each student decided to turn a box into something else.  Love how these engineers work!

Acorns

This week we had a visitor from the Virginia Department of Forestry.  Ms. Palmer ask showed us the many different kinds of acorns and asked for our help in collecting some white oak acorns.  We were happy to help out and found some trees right on the school grounds! We have enjoyed collecting the acorns. We were even able to observe the acorn weevil grub as it came out of some of some of the acorns we collected.

A Hope for this year

During the first weeks of school we talk about some of our hopes and dreams for the school year. This year the hopes and dreams ranged from being able to "pump on the swing", to "read a whole page in a book", to "mix chemicals"!  This week some were able to accomplish the "pumping" goal.  We are practicing our reading and we mixed some chemicals!  What a great way to begin our science unit on senses!

First weeks

This year is off to a great start.  We are spending time getting to know one another and the materials we will use during the year.  I am so excited to see the enthusiasm this group has for all that we are doing!
