We Are Writers!

So excited about the growth that is happening in writing!  Take a look at the work I am seeing in their drawing and writing books!

Using the sounds we hear to label!

Using sounds to write a sentence- I love my seahorse

Using our sounds to write a sentence to match our illustration- I have two pet guppies.

So much to do so little time!

The Penguins have been very hard at work and I have been neglectful in posting photos of what we have been up to! Below please take a look at some of the activities that have kept up learning and growing!

October Happenings

We have been working very hard in our classroom.  We have had fun testing our sense of smell in science and playing build it in math!

We also had some rainy days that gave us the chance to get creative during indoor recess!

3rd graders share some illustrations

We have looking at illustrations in books that we read.  We have been talking about how the illustrations really help to tell the story.  Our third grade friends shared some illustration that they thought were really good at helping to tell the story.  We worked on a plan for our illustrations.
#1--- plan your idea.
#2---start with pencil. (It is easier to erase than crayon)
#3---add colors that make sense.

We will continue to work on our illustrations.  Here are some photos of our third grade friends sharing with us!

Apple orchard trip

While the day began a little foggy,  we had a great time at the apple orchard yesterday!  Many thanks to all the parents that joined us for our trip!

Fog beginning to lift as we took our wagon ride.

We learned that the orchard is 1000 feet up the mountain. We had some good ideas about why a farmer would want to put his orchard on the top of a hill.

We learned how the bees help the apple trees.

Looking for just the right apples.

Finding some good ones!

Community Building

We have learned that a community is where you live, work, and play.  We are sharing some of the things we like to do in our community.  We also learned that we are part of a bigger community, our country.  We learned that the flag (Star Spangled Banner, Old Glory, Stars and Stripes) is a symbol for our country.  We wanted to make a symbol for our learning community! We learned that some communities and families created totem poles to tell their community/family story.  We decided to make a totem pole to tell our learning community's story.

We planned our ideas,

and then we got to work!

Ms. Mayer helped us!

We worked carefully.

We choose our materials.

Can you see the face?

Working Hard!

This has been a very busy week.  We began our handwriting lessons.  We talked about good posture and pencil grips.  We are working on building our reading muscles. We read together as a class and students were able to "read to self" for 5 1/2 minutes!  We learned a new math game called, "roll and record" and created some interesting designs with our pattern blocks. We are enjoying getting to know one another, sharing our mystery letter bags, and our stories.   Of course we did find time to have a little fun.  Everyone enjoyed trying to keep his/her egg from falling on the ice!
