Fun With Our Feet!

Last week we had a lot of fun with our feet.  We traced, measured, and compared the length of our feet.  We also used our feet to make a holiday surprise!

New Rug

So excited about the new rug.  Many thanks to the PTO for helping us to get this carpet.  The colors brighten the room, and the students love saying "reading" the alphabet!

November 18

We began our look at Thanksgiving by sharing what we knew about it.

You have a harvest.
We eat turkey.
Lots of food
We eat stuffing
I love sitting with my family and decorating the table.
There are flowers.
We go to our cousin's house.
We give stuff to other people.
I go to my dad and grandma's house.
We have macaroni instead.  Our turkey is old.
We have chicken.
We feed our dog.
I don't like turkey.

Then we talked about what we were wondering about Thanksgiving.

Why do we have turkey?
Why do we have of people at dinner?
When was the first Thanksgiving?
Is it celebrated in every state?
What was the first Thanksgiving like?
Who was at the first Thanksgiving?

We read several books about Thanksgiving.  We watched a movie about Thanksgiving.
Here is what we learned and now what we are wondering.
The Pilgrims traveled on the Mayflower.
They landed and made a house out of what was around them.
The winter was cold.
The Indians taught them how to fish and grow good plants.
They had a good harvest.
The Indian was Squanto.
The first Thanksgiving lasted 3 days and 3 nights.
90 Indians came.
Where is the Mayflower now?
We celebrated with our own Kindergarten Cafe Thanksgiving.
All of the Kindergarten classes were together.
We tried new foods and made new friends.

                                                             HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

November 13 Sharing our writing

After our trip to Spring Gate Farm, students wrote about their experiences. Here are some snap shots of students as they share their work with their classmates. Notice the great illustrations and how many are adding letters and words to their pictures!

November 8

We have been very busy! The class earned over 108 snowballs and they had their very first indoor snowball fight! (Wish I had remembered to take pictures!) They enjoyed the trip to Spring Gate Farm. They loved seeing the machinery and plants, but really liked looking at the animals!

Writing

This quarter we have been studying illustrations. We have practiced telling stories and are now creating illustrations that tell a story. We begin with pencil. Use colors that make sense and then add details.
"This is me moving to a new house when I get bigger."
"I want to be a dentist."
"I want to be a mom"

Pumpkin Glyph

We made glyphs to tell information about us. Then we were able to sort the pumpkins based on the information the glyph showed. Each time we sorted we talked about what we noticed.
The eyes told what kind of pumpkin we liked best. (Big,small, medium)
The nose told if we liked to carve pumpkins. (Many of us do!)
The mouth told if we liked pumpkin pie, if we didn't, or if we have never tried it.

October 13

Students practiced, "Read to Someone" this week. We sit "EEKK" style. (elbow to elbow, knee to knee, with the book in the middle.) We take turns reading to each other. This builds our reading stamina.
